Individual Therapy


Individual therapy involves meeting on a one-on-one basis with a therapist. 
Your therapist helps reduce feelings of personal discomfort, internal conflicts, negative thinking, beliefs and feelings, and uncomfortable sensations in the body – even physical pain.  Individual therapy --counseling-- is a highly effective approach that has been proven to be successful in helping people find solutions for a wide diversity of life concerns, problems, and issues.  

Individual Therapy may be used to resolve barriers interfering with positive qualities, such as joy, compassion, peace, self-esteem, spiritual connection, and love. This form of counseling is a common and useful means of self-growth and self-actualization.

With individual therapy, you can learn to recognize and replace the old negative patterns of thoughts and behaviors with new, healthier alternatives in daily life. Individual therapy is a highly effective approach and has been proven to be successful in treating a wide variety of emotional problems and issues, such as –

Individual therapy is usually focused on both the presenting problem and deeper chronic problem issues.  Desired results are most often achieved in approximately 10-20 sessions.  Most people often enjoy rapid and enduring change and relief from their symptoms and problems. I work in partnership with you to address your therapeutic needs and goals.

Marriage and Couple's Therapy

 
Couples therapy involves meeting with a therapist as a couple who are in a committed relationship.  

In a marriage, effective communication is the number one ingredient that keeps couples together. Effective communication is essential in resolving conflicts common in every marriage. Love is also fundamental. However, without communication it is difficult to keep the love-feelings alive in the midst of ongoing difficulty and strife. Eventually, something has to give, and too often it is the commitment to one another.

Most often, couples come to therapy as a "last ditch" effort. Counseling is often put off until separation and threats of divorce are daily occurrences. The couple has often reached a point where neither one can "take it" anymore. The reluctance to seek help outside the marriage is understandable, but too often fuels the fire of emotional distress by prolonging negative moods and behaviors.

The good news is that when a couple is motivated to stay together, therapy can still be effective in repairing the damage that might have already occurred. Recognition of the communication challenges often faced in marriage have encouraged newly formed couples -even before marriage- to enter couples therapy to promote effective communication and correct the problem issues that may be developing and might eventually get in the way of their commitment to their relationship.

Group Therapy

Group Therapy – Individual members or multi-couple members
Group Therapy is psychotherapy in a small group of individuals (6-12 members). The group meets, with a trained group therapist, for the purpose of personal growth and healing. Members agree to maintain confidentiality -- to not discuss any group content outside the group. During sessions, members decide what they want to talk about, and while openness is encouraged, no one is forced to reveal information, which they choose to keep private.  Group therapy may eventually become an extension of individual or couples therapy.  Participants are selected after successfully participating in individual or couples therapy. 

Through interacting with others in the group, members learn and understand more about themselves and their effect on others outside the group through the feedback they receive from their fellow group members. People in the group provide emotional support and friendly connections for one another. In this environment where trust and safety are built, members can express their thoughts and feelings more freely than they may be able to do outside the group. The therapist helps in keeping the group on track and promotes an environment appropriate for sharing, feedback and support. Group therapy is similar to support groups with regard to alleviation of symptoms, enhancing coping, offering alternatives and providing comfort. Change is also emphasized especially in the area of interpersonal relating. Support groups and group therapy are both led by a trained therapist, whereas in self-help groups, a professional may not always be present.

Group Therapy

In my office, Group Therapy is about getting on with moving on. It is for people who are ready to share, discuss, and plan their lives with the help and support of other individuals. The group process develops sharing of common concerns, how others may have faced these concerns, and a sense of hope for future growth and development.

Group Therapy is therapy that happens in a small group of individuals (6-12 members). The group meets with a trained group therapist for the purpose of personal growth and healing. Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a recognized medical modality for changing or modifying physical responses and behaviors. Biofeedback is learning an activity where your mind controls the actions or your body - playing golf, riding a bicycle, or playing the piano. As with watching your golf swing on video, you will watch the responses of your body on a computer and learn to make adjustments so your health improves.

If you have ever made a decision for yourself by looking into a mirror, weighing on a bathroom scale, or taking your body temperature with a thermometer, you have practiced biofeedback. Biofeedback therapy uses tools that are designed to give you changing information instantaneously, so that you can watch your body changing in positive ways and see your progress toward better health.

Biofeedback is one part of a comprehensive plan of ongoing monitoring and treatment by your professional health care team. It is not a replacement for physical therapy, medical, dental, or psychological care. Your doctor will be regularly updated so that your progress is monitored because improvements may indicate changes in other treatments, medications, etc. 

Research has shown Biofeedback to be an excellent treatment alternative for stress-related disorders.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), is a powerful psychotherapeutic treatment method which has been very successful in helping people who suffer from trauma, anxiety, panic, disturbing memories, post traumatic stress and many other emotional problems. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Treatment

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD ) is an anxiety disorder that some people develop after seeing or living through an event perceived as dangerous; from life threatening to loss of livelihood or marriage.  When in danger, it’s natural to feel afraid. This fear triggers many split-second changes in the body to prepare to defend against the danger or to avoid it. This “fight-or-flight” response is a healthy reaction meant to protect a person from harm. But, in PTSD, this reaction is changed or damaged.  Often there are a number of high stress-related occurrences happening at one time.  The fear may be compounded by feelings of being trapped, helpless, hopeless, and wanting to help others without the ability. People who have PTSD almost always feel stressed or frightened even when they’re no longer in danger.

PTSD can cause many symptoms. These symptoms can be grouped into three categories:

1. Re-experiencing symptoms: 

Re-experiencing symptoms may cause problems in a person’s everyday routine. They can start from the person’s own thoughts and feelings. Words, objects, or situations that are reminders of the event can also trigger re-experiencing.

  • Flashbacks—reliving the trauma over and over, including physical symptoms like a racing heart or sweating
  • Bad dreams
  • Frightening thoughts.

2. Avoidance symptoms: 

  • Staying away from places, events, or objects that are reminders of the experience
  • Feeling emotionally numb
  • Feeling strong guilt, depression, or worry
  • Losing interest in activities that were enjoyable in the past
  • Having trouble remembering the dangerous event.
  • Things that remind a person of the traumatic event can trigger avoidance    symptoms. These symptoms may cause a person to change his or her    personal routine. For example, after a bad car accident, a person who usually drives may avoid driving or riding in a car.

3. Hyperarousal symptoms: 

Hyperarousal symptoms are usually constant, instead of being triggered by things that remind one of the traumatic event. They can make the person feel stressed and angry. These symptoms may make it hard to do daily tasks, such as sleeping, eating, or concentrating.

  • Being easily startled
  • Feeling tense or “on edge”
  • Having difficulty sleeping, and/or having angry outbursts.

It’s natural to have some of these symptoms after a dangerous event. Sometimes people have very serious symptoms that go away after a few weeks. This is called acute stress disorder, or ASD. When the symptoms last more than a few weeks and become an ongoing problem, they might be PTSD. Some people with PTSD don’t show any symptoms for weeks or months.

4 Types of Treatment

The four most common treatments for PTSD include psychodynamic, cognitive-behavior therapy, pharmacotherapy, and group therapy. And, there is Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). 

3 Phases of Therapy

Therapy can be divided into three phases:
Establishing trust, safety, and "earning a right to gain access" to carefully guarded traumatic material.
Trauma-focused therapy, exploring traumatic material in depth, reducing intrusive recollections with avoidant/numbing symptoms.
Helping the patient disconnect from the trauma and reconnect with family, friends, and society.

Therapeutic Methods

Therapeutic methods might include Psychodynamic Therapy (talk therapy), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (designed to manage anxiety), Pharmacotherapy (medications to reduce anxiety symptoms while allowing individual and group therapies to work), Group Therapy (mutual support from others with the same experiences), and Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) for developing more appropriate understanding of the trauma to help in managing the trauma.

Chronic Pain Treatment

A multidisciplinary treatment approach is the most effective way to address the complex problem of chronic pain. Multidisciplinary treatment teams are generally composed of 2 or more treatment disciplines (e.g., psychology, anesthesiology, neurology, or physical therapy), each with expertise in the assessment and treatment of chronic pain. Team members work together to provide the best treatment program for a patient’s pain.

 
Psychological Approaches to Pain Management:


Psychological factors -- mood, beliefs about pain and coping style-- are important in an individual’s adjustment to chronic pain. Over time, chronic pain creates increased, and debilitating, pain. For example, when pain persists over time, a person may avoid doing regular activities for fear of further injury or increased pain. This can include work, family events, social activities, or hobbies. As the individual withdraws and becomes less active, their muscles may become weaker, they may begin to gain or lose weight, and their overall physical conditioning may decline. This can contribute to the belief that one is disabled. As pain continues, the person may develop hopelessness, e.g., "this is never going to get better," or negative thoughts about themselves, e.g., "I’m worthless to my family because I can’t work." This type of thinking can lead a person increasing levels of depression and anxiety. These moods can maintain and increase the pain cycle and the level of experienced pain.

 

The fact that psychological factors can have an impact on the experience of pain does not mean that the pain is "in the person's head" or not real. Most people who report pain are really experiencing it, even if a physical cause cannot be identified.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been found to be highly effective in helping patients to reduce pain, disability and distress. CBT for chronic pain management involves modifying negative thoughts related to pain -- this pain is going to kill me, I’m worthless because of the pain, I can’t cope with this pain -- and on finding and increasing a person’s activity level and productive functioning. This approach for pain management promotes positive changes in thinking and behavior. Treatment can be delivered individually or in a group setting.
CBT for pain management is tailored to the individual needs of the patient but may include:

•    Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

•    Relaxation Training
•    Stress and Anger Management
•    Activity Pacing
•    Psychotherapy for insight and development of coping skills (Cognitive Restructuring)

As part of a multidisciplinary pain treatment team, CBT may incorporate exercise goals set by the physical therapist, or may include recommendations made by the anesthesiologist for taking pain medications at prescribed time intervals.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis occurs naturally, every day, during our daily activities. We actually spend an estimated 70% of a typical day in some level of hypnotic activity. It is a means of focusing attention or concentrating in a manner that can help a person learn, remember, or solve a problem. 

"Trance" that is often described as a part of hypnosis also occurs naturally. It occurs when a person's attention becomes focused and relatively free of distractions, and a person may feel more relaxed because of the reduction of distractions. During hypnosis the focus of attention can sometimes be narrowed to a level which can allow distractions to be ignored or blocked out of conscious thought. Examples of trance are daydreaming, mentally rehearsing for an event, memorizing material for future recall, and in certain forms of meditation.

In psychotherapy, hypnosis can help a person enter a relaxed, comfortable, alternative awareness state for obtaining specific, goal-oriented outcomes. As the therapist, I can provide suggestions designed to help a person achieve, or recall, specific internal processes, e.g., feelings, memories, images and internal self-talk, that can lead to desired outcomes.

Myths and Misconceptions about Hypnosis:


•    Hypnosis is not mind control or brainwashing. The therapist uses the communication methods of suggestion that are designed to help a person focus their attention. However, the person actually decides whether to use or accept any suggestion(s).

•    During the “trance state,” a person is not immobilized. The person knows exactly where they are and what they are doing throughout the entire hypnosis session. They can adjust their position, scratch, sneeze, or cough without interrupting the hypnosis process. They can open their eyes (if their eyes have been closed) and come out of hypnosis and the trance-state at any time they wish. During hypnosis, they can still hear sounds around them. They will be immediately responsive to an emergency situation, e.g., hearing a fire alarm or any other situation that may need their immediate attention. They can speak as they might need or hold a conversation during their hypnosis session.


•    Trance is not the same as sleep. Some people become relaxed enough during trance they may feel as though they have fallen asleep. In a deep trance (relaxed and focused) state, they may actually no longer consciously hear the therapist. This is not a problem because the so-called unconscious part (a normal part of brain activity) of their mind continues to listen to the voice of the therapist while another part of brainwave activity seems to daydream. During trance, the person can still follow instructions and will come back --"awaken"-- when they are asked to do so.

•    There is no "right" way to experience being in trance. One person may experience it as a deep, heavy restful feeling, while another may experience it as a light, floating sensation. Some people hear every word spoken by the therapist, while others allow their minds to drift to other thoughts. Some experience vivid imagery, while others do not. Some people remember the suggestions they hear, and some may not. Every person's experience of hypnosis is unique.


•    Hypnosis cannot cause anyone to do something against their will or that contradicts their values. A therapist is ethically required to make only those suggestions that support agreed-upon outcomes.

Hypnosis, however, cannot be used for every problem. It may still be necessary for you to do some conscientious planning and research about the types of changes you want to achieve. You must still take action to get results. Hypnosis is not a cure-all; it is a help-aid. Hypnosis can be effective in many cases, but without your willingness and dedication to your desired outcome or goal, it is likely that hypnosis may not have the effect you want.

I have been a researcher in hypnosis for over 30 years. I was one of the first researchers who used brain-mapping technology to observe how hypnosis affects the brain. My experience includes published research, and academic presentations to many professional groups, audiences and researchers.

 

Coaching and Mentoring

Coaching is learning through a relationship. As Albert Einstein is credited with saying, "the same thinking that was used to create a problem cannot be used to solve it."   Dr. Wayland challenges people wanting to become leaders, be better leaders, who want to maintain leadership, to confront their older mental models; their routine ways of thinking, of seeing and perceiving, and their linear ways of problem-solving. The coaching challenge becomes moving beyond what is known and searching for what is unknown.

Coaching works by asking questions that focus on what really is real.  Real issues can often be obscured by stress, overload, negative emotions, and conscious or unconscious restricted thinking. Dr. Wayland has the knowledge, skill, and experience to ask the right questions, and get to the bottom of the real issue very quickly. The expansion of the client's awareness, tapping into intuition and effectively coming up with their own, individual, way of moving forward with certainty can generate a wealth of growth-ideas. Mentoring is a partnership formed for growth and training. Dr. Wayland shares knowledge, acquired skills, information, and perspective to promote the personal and professional growth of others. The power of mentoring creates a one-of-a-kind opportunity for partnership, accomplishment of goals, and new creativity in problem solving.

Dr. Wayland can offer one-on-one or small group mentoring. His approach is to use a relaxed casualness that allows spontaneity and an interchange of ideas. All mentees meet three to four times per year to experience personal growth of others, provide support, and to exchange advice among others.

Jim uses psychodynamic and behavioral psychology methods to provide effective, efficient lasting results.  He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, a Fellow in the Association of Scientific Hypnotherapy, and is certified in Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).  Jim uses his education and his experience in helping people suffering from personal crisis, emotional and physical trauma, addiction, stress-related illness, and chronic pain.

Dr. Wayland’s research background has been in Neuropsychology and the Psychophysiology of Hypnosis. He is also experienced in college teaching, public speaking, mentoring and coaching.  He is known nationally and internationally for his work with addictions – alcohol, drugs and sexual addictions.  Jim is a member of the Texas Medical Association’s Speakers Bureau.  He is noted for having a unique ability to connect with others using skills of insight, experience, and finding the truths which circumstances have often hidden.

 

Retreats and Workshops

All retreats and workshops occur when there is enough interest among a group of people who are wanting to establish understanding with others and use the support of others in developing deeper meaning and understanding with themselves and their lives.

Both retreat and workshop dates and times are announced with a six-week advance notice. Some seminars are half-day. Some workshops can be a full-day, a day and a half, and two full days.
